8 Healthy Tips To Protect Skin And Hair This Winter

Winter weather challenges your skin by causing it to be dry, itchy, and flaky. Your hair becomes brittle and more prone to breakage. Cold winter air lacks humidity and dries up natural oils in your skin and hair thereby causing uncomfortable reactions. One obvious solution, but not practical one, is simply to stay inside during the winter months. Besides, indoor heating systems produce dry air that dries out the skin and hair due to a lack of humidity.

There are some easy steps you can take to protect your skin and hair during the winter months. Simply put, make smart choices in selecting the soaps you use to cleanse your body and launder your clothing; keep your skin and hair covered up when out and about; and increase the moisture inside your home by using a diffuser. As you prepare for your winter skin and hair care protocol, be sure to consider any existing skin conditions you may have. Winter weather not only irritates healthy skin but can also exacerbate any current skin problems. The skin, our largest organ, works day and night to protect our inner body. It deserves love and care.

Use these 8 tips to maximize your winter skincare and hair care regiments:

1) Use a Moisturizer throughout the day. Start by using a mild castile soap during your morning shower. Only use lukewarm water because hot water dries the skin. After rinsing, apply a body oil to lock in extra moisture and to start hydrating the skin immediately. Next, apply a moisturizing body butter or crème to the entire body while giving the feet and elbows extra attention. Lastly, use a light moisturizer after each time you wash your hands. Remember to use a generous amount of a moisturizer on your face before you retire for the evening. I recommend any Keilove body butters or body oils for protecting your skin throughout the winter season.

2) Minimize use of hair dryer. If you're already dealing with dry, brittle hair, resist the urge to reach for the hair dryer. Hot air will worsen the situation. Dry and style your hair with a towel, and if you still want to use a dryer, use it briefly on a low temperature setting. Use Keilove hair care products which contain humectants to promote moisture retention. The winter is a great time to give your hair an oil treatment. Keilove offers fresh uplifting Lemongrass Hair Oil Treatment and a flowery Citrus Lavender Hair oil treatment.

3) Use a sun block before venturing out. For best results apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher to the face, hands, and any other skin that may be exposed to the winter elements. Keilove Avocado Body Butter is a natural sun block. However, you may need more protection depending on your skin melanin. Remember a sun block will act as a barrier to help protect against the winter weather conditions and is especially important if you will be outside for prolonged periods of time.

4) Protect your lips. One of the biggest problems during winter is chapped lips. “Keilove Pucker Up! Lip Balms” seal moisture in lips and protect them against exposure to harsh weather conditions. Heavy winds, dry heat, and cold temperatures have a damaging effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin and often the first body part to produce signs of dryness. Our natural butter and vital essential oils, work to prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort while our tasty formulas provide additional, natural benefits.

5) Dress in layers. Itchy skin is often triggered by sweating and overheating. Wearing layers allows you to remove clothing as needed to prevent overheating. Be sure to wear loose-fitting cotton fabrics next to your skin.

6) Wear gloves. Protect your hands from frigid conditions by wearing gloves. This precaution will help to prevent chapped, irritated skin. Make sure the gloves are made from natural fibers. Wear a cotton mitten next to the skin and a woolen mitten over the cotton one to keep hands warm and dry.

7) Use a humidifier. With the heat on and the windows closed, the air inside becomes very dry in the winter. Use a humidifier to provide you with moisture in the air. If you don’t want to invest in an expensive humidifying system, smaller, relatively inexpensive humidifiers can be obtained at a local drug store. Placing two or three of these around your home will help to reduce the dry air. Make sure you keep one going while you are asleep. Add a few drops of essential oil to keep the air fresh and germ-free. It’s worth the investment to keep skin from drying and becoming cracked and itchy.

8) Wear natural fibers sleepwear. Choose sheets made from cotton and loose-fitting sleepwear to assure your comfort while snuggling under your blankets. Think natural fabrics to maximize your rest and well-being.

Be well.
